Avudaiyar Koil Trip -- Oct 29 2016

Ever since I started reading Thiruvasagam, my emotions started sublimating to deep devotion towards Lord Shiva. I started having deep gratitude towards Manickavasagar Peruman. It might take many life times by one's own effort to gain the wisdom which is expressed in Thiruvasagam. Very fortunate to be born in this land and in this culture.

For the past one year, I was thinking of going to Avudaiyar temple built by St. Manickavasagar and I visited this temple on Oct-29-2016 (day after Deepavali festival). This is a Shiva temple situated near Aranthangi in the Pudukkottai district of Tamil Nadu. We started from Thanjavur after having breakfast around 8.45am in a car and temple was about 115Kms from there.  Weather was perfect with slight drizzle and clouds. Thanjavur is known for rich delta area for agriculture and it is delightful to watch lush green fields along the both sides of the road during our drive. My uncle played an audio on Thirumanthira upadesam in the car which set the mood & tone for our destination. Most of the remote Indian roads has many pits & holes filled with rain water and I enjoy driving in them. First we reached a town called Puthukottai, then Aranthangi and finally reached Avudaiyar temple. We parked the car and had a nice hot tea in a tea shop before the temple.  Some people were chanting Thiruvasagam inside the temple and it is broadcasted through loud speakers outside the temple and we heard them while having tea.  My heart became full just by looking temple gopuram(tower) and the saying “Namasivaya vaazhga” at the top of the gopuram. Generally I observe within myself that whenever I visit Shiva temple, temporarily I become free from all of my wants and I become centered on peace and just surrender to HIM. I don’t pray or request anything.
I recommend everyone to visit this ancient temple with rich sculptures and spiritual significance.

Temple History:-
Manickavasagar was the prime minister in Arimarthana Pandyan Kingdom in Madurai and he was given huge money and a task to buy horses for cavalry. So he left Madurai and reached a place called Thiruperunthurai (now it is called as Avudaiyar Koil). Till this point in his life, he was living a normal life. At this place, Lord Shiva came as Gnana Guru (Wisdom Master) in human form and gave him three types of initiation (or Dheekshai)
1.      Nayana Dheekshai  -- Through eyes
2.      Sparisa Dheekshai – By touching through hands
3.      Thiruvadi Dheekshai – By touching through feet

As per Shaiva Siddhantha philosophy, God will manifest as Master in human form to those who attain the peak of maturity. Instantly for Manickavasagar, all the illusions fell apart and his body filled with ecstasy.  He sat there in Shiva yoga and forgot about the task given to him by the king. He used the money given by the king to build the temple here. Even as the temple construction was in progress, King Arimarthana Pandian waited for days for the arrival of Manickavasagar and the horses. Later, he realised that the money was already spent and commanded Manickavasagar to bring along the horses without further delay. According to tradition, Lord Siva transformed a pack of foxes into fine breed of horses. In the night, the horses became foxes and let out a deafening howl. God appeared before the king and explained he was behind the mischievous drama. The story of ‘nariyai’ (fox) ‘pariyakkuthal’ (horse) is still enacted during temple festivals in Madurai, the capital of Pandiyas.
Manickavasagar penned Thiruvasagam and Thirupalliyezhuchi while camping in this temple and referred to it as Thiruperunthurai. Lord name is Atmanathar (Leader for Souls) and goddess name is Yogambal (Form of Yoga).  The presiding deity is formless (Atmanathar); there is no Shivalingam but only a pedestal {Avudayar} located in the sanctum, hence the name Avudayar Koil.
As part of everyday ritual here in temple, the priests will put freshly cooked rice in a platform which is almost 30-40 feet away from the main deity during mid-day prayer. It is wonderful to watch that the steam from rice goes to the deity without any air flow. It is a symbolic representation that soul reaches God and both are formless.
It is believed that Manickavasagar is the re-incarnation of Nandi and hence this is the only Shiva temple without Nandi. Nandi is the name for the bull which serves as the mount (or Vehicle) of the god Shiva and as the gatekeeper of Shiva and Parvati. In Hindu Religion, he is the chief guru of eighteen masters (18 Siddhars) including Patanjali and Thirumular. Temples venerating Shiva display stone images of a seated Nandi, generally facing the main shrine. There are also a number of temples dedicated solely to Nandi. Nandi is example for unlimited patience and ever waiting without any conditions.
Among all the great people who worshipped Shiva, Manickavasagar is very unique. Probably he is the humblest of all and he cried that he doesn’t have any quality to see Shiva. This melted Lord Shiva and he came down to enlighten him.  We can see that in Thiruvasagam.  Anyone who has little open mind reads Thiruvasagam, it is certain that he or she will melt. Personally, I never found any other book which is so rich and touching. There is a famous saying
" திருவாசகத்துக்கு உருகார் ஒரு வாசகத்திற்கும் உருகார்"
translating to "He whose heart is not melted by Thiruvasagam cannot be melted by any vasagam(saying)".

Commitment

An interesting read from a Facebook page today...

Why are we seeing so many psychological cases now? Why are even the children becoming neurotic? What's happening to the world? Somehow in the name of civilization and culture, we have lost our strength. We have lost control over our own senses. We have become weak. That s why nowadays nobody even wants to make a commitment. The minute you get married, the commitment chokes you. You immediately feel, "Ohh, it's too much for me, I can't live like this." You want to get out. There is no commitment between husband and wife, between parents and child, between teacher and student, between employer and employee.

Commitment is very important in life. Those who want to lead a spiritual life are here to change all these things and to rebuild a better world. Remember that. You have a great task, and it's not impossible. If you really put your heart and soul into that, you can do it. Begin with your own life. Let nothing shake you. You have to be really bold and strong to achieve anything in life. Be that bold. When you know that something is right, don't hesitate to follow it. Certainly there may be obstacles, tests; but don't give up. Even if you should fall down or make a mistake, get up and say, "No! The next time I'll be strong." Keep on going, like great mountain climbers, until you reach the top. If you really want to do it, you will be given the needed strength. You will have all the support. If you want it, you've got it; but your want has to be that strong.

Introduction to Blackbelt

I’ve been posted with these questions a lot of times from different people who don’t know about karate.
1.      Is black belt highest in Karate?
2.      How many people you can fight?
3.      Can you break bricks, wood etc..?
4.      Will you able to teach people?

People who practiced karate have different sets of questions or opinions.
1.      How many push-ups/sit ups you can do?
2.      How many forms or katas you know?
3.      How many competitions you participated etc...

This small write-up is to clear those questions with my understanding and experience. There is always mystery about martial arts. Very few masters and grand masters tasted the essence of it. Others got stuck with either their physical strength or ego. Ego is like virus and it is never acceptable for black belt. Typically in almost all styles of karate, new students will start with white belt. They have to practice consistently, sincerely for 4-5 years before reaching a black belt level. The class gives very nice structure to follow and discipline to their character. In that process, their growth will be measured on different belt levels. Students will go through 7-8 levels of growth stages before getting black belt. Each level is denoted by a color belt which signifies the understanding, experience of techniques, overall balance of oneself and responsibility to maintain that knowledge and experience. An instructor or master will measure the growth of the students at different levels and give them the necessary inputs, training to make them to grow to next level. In this process, the emotions, behaviors, physical and mental stamina of the students will be thoroughly tested and refined to make them overall balanced human beings. This is the art of man-making or character building which helps the students to meet the real life challenges with courage and clarity.

It’s such a beautiful system where the student will know each step of his/her growth. Typically, in our normal educational system we train our intellect to understand/dissect things. Most of the time, we neglect our body and emotions. Hence, it leads to imbalanced way of living. We remain handicapped if our emotions shoot up. We take pills if our body aches. If we give proper awareness to our mind, body and spirit, we can eliminate most of these complications in our life. It will help us to understand who we are, rather than spending all our energy to prove to the society about how we are perceived. The profound sense of self worthiness will flourish and we can develop a deeper appreciation for life.

In our day-to-day life, most of the time we operate out of memory, our minds are busy with something and we don’t pay attention to what we do. This greatly affects the quality of our living. The art helps us to break this pattern and keep us real. Being real and paying attention to life lessons will help us to gain the wisdom in life. This wisdom is more precious like a diamond which will greatly enhances our quality of our living.

Being a black belt and wearing a black belt are two different things. Being black belt will reflect in all walks of our life. It’s a different caliber or high class in character.  Here are some of the composites of that character.
1.      He is very structured and disciplined.
2.      He stand up for himself and for others.
3.      He always maintain high level of respect for himself and others.
4.      He loves and cares for everybody. His love is his choice and not bound by other’s behaviors.
5.      He is pretty committed to himself and his people.
6.      He sees people beyond their emotions and look for the best in them and will try to bring that out.
7.      He will see the real life situations as it is without any emotions and dissect them.
8.      He is strong and humble.
9.      He is truthful, honest and straightforward.
10.   He is very patient and tolerant.
11.   He carries himself very well with high level of balance between mind, body and spirit.
12.   He is very attentive in all his actions and conversations.
13.   He choose not live in fear or anger.
14.   He is aware of his emotions and lead his life with logical mind or consciousness.
15.   He is unselfish and always look for everybody to win in a situation.
16.   He keeps himself in better place and lift his people to a better place if they wish to.
17.   He values integrity over money, status, posts etc.
18.   He believes in himself and the existence.
19.   He always look forward to learn from people and life.
20.   He remain strong, clear and positive in dealing with life challenges.
21.   He shares his best and wishes the best to everybody.
22.   His strength, his presence will comfort his people.
23.   He is unmoved within himself but can move at his will.
24.   He is calm, serene and peaceful but if the situation demands, he will step up and deal with whatever it takes.
25.   He will not allow anybody to do any foolishness with his life. But he understands, accept people for who they are and respect their choices for their life.
26.   He is highly dependable and trustworthy.
27.   If he makes mistake, he will apologize and correct it as quickly as possible. He will not beat himself. Once he learns better, he will do better.
28.   He values his time, his energy and his life. He doesn’t indulge in any foolish or negative conversations.
29.   He doesn’t give excuses. He gets things done.
30.   He will not worry about the future. He stay disciplined, clear and let the life unfold.
31.   He will not allow anybody to question his existence in this world. He believes his existence is more meaningful here.
32.   He will always appreciate what he got in his life.
33.   He always look at the big picture in life and act accordingly.

Snippet from Thirukkural

I'm extremely proud of being born in a Tamil culture because of its values and the beauty of the language itself. The Tamil culture has very long history behind it. There are lot of literature and spiritual books available in Tamil language. Among those, I read the below 2 books almost everyday and they are very valuable to me.
1. "Thirukkural"  by Thiruvalluvar
2. "Thiruvasagam" by Saint Manickavasagar

Tamil language is among-st the oldest living languages of the world with its extra-ordinary volume of literature and grammar. It has been the means through which people have vividly expressed their understanding, aspirations and ideals. Its oldest work Tolkaappiyam dates back to about 200 years BC. Some of the greatest works of ancient Tamil are of the Sangam period. The poets of the Sangam age belonged to all categories of occupations ranging from potters and peasants of a village to the merchants and the noble class. Among them were also women poets. This is a sign of equality in Tamil society. In fact, the message of peace, universality and of the human race being one was propounded more than 2000 years ago by a Sangam poet in the famous lines:

Thirukural written by Thiruvalluvar is a remarkable treatise on ethics. Mahatma Gandhi, the Father of the Indian Nation, at one point of time is known to have said, "I wanted to learn Tamil to enable me to study Valluvar's Thirukural in his mother tongue itself. It is a treasure of wisdom."

For contented human life, three things are essential and Thirukkural has this as 3 major divisions.
1. Aram or Dharma (Ethics or Righteousness)
2. Porul or Artha (Material wealth)
3. Inbam or Kama (Pleasure)

Different countries, different cultures have different disciplines/ethics/moral codes. In this blog post, I analyse or understand the ethics/morality and it's importance from Thirukkural.

In the below kural, Thiruvalluvar says real happiness in human life can come only if we live with morality.

Yogi Shuddhananda Translations :

Weal flows only from virtue done The rest is rue and renown gone.

Now the natural question is how do we define the morality. Thiruvalluvar answers that in another kural. Anything that we do from the purity of mind is moral.

மனத்துக்கண் மாசிலன் ஆதல்; அனைத்துஅறன்;

Yogi Shuddhananda Translations :

In spotless mind virtue is found And not in show and swelling sound.

Ok. How do we purify our mind? Below kural answers that. Only truth or honesty can help us to get rid of the clutter within us and keep our mind clear. Without taking honest look at us, we will live life less than the best. Truth gives us tremendous amount of strength.

Yogi Shuddhananda Translations :

Water makes you pure outward Truth renders you pure inward.

Zhuang Zhou Qutoes

Happiness is the absence of the striving for happiness.
Flow with whatever is happening and let your mind be free. Stay centered by accepting whatever you are doing. This is the ultimate.
I do not know whether I was then a man dreaming I was a butterfly, or whether I am now a butterfly dreaming I am a man.
Rewards and punishments are the lowest form of education.
Men honor what lies within the sphere of their knowledge, but do not realize how dependent they are on what lies beyond it.
Cherish that which is within you, and shut off that which is without; for much knowledge is a curse.
Great wisdom is generous; petty wisdom is contentious. Great speech is impassioned, small speech cantankerous.
We cling to our own point of view, as though everything depended on it. Yet our opinions have no permanence; like autumn and winter, they gradually pass away.
Where can I find a man who has forgotten words so I can have a word with him?

To a mind that is still, the whole universe surrenders.

Hike to Murietta falls

When we started from San Jose on late Saturday morning(March 12 2016), I really didn’t feel like stepping out of home. I felt like sit down on couch and watch some good movies. But Gopi was ready to go with all his gears and his eyes were glittering with full enthusiasm. I’ve to step up and override my lazy feelings. We had wonderful breakfast at home and then we started to Del Vale. After getting park permit at Del Vale park entrance, we reached Del Vale Lake parking by 1pm. The weather was bit windy and chill. I’ve to wear 2 jackets and a cap to feel warm. We started hiking on Ohlone Wilderness Trail by 1.05pm. After 30min of hike, I felt really warm. I removed the big jacket and cap. We were talking and walking. There were lots of clouds in the sky and so were my mind with thoughts.

As we walked for about an hour, the cloud of thoughts just cleared within my mind. I became centered on deep silence within myself. At that time, I saw that there is very thin layer between me and this whole existence. I felt my body, mind and intellect are infinitely small in compared to this existence. It’s a beautiful experience to exist as a piece of life in tune with nature. People were rushing back from Murietta falls as the rain was going to come and they called it as bad weather. But I didn’t have any fear and we were marching steadily towards the falls enjoying the trees, small green plants, dark clouds, chill breeze and wet trail. Gopi said that it is like Western Ghats in India.  I felt very homely.

In between, we reached a creek with water flow. It was so beautiful and I instantly became very fresh by looking at the water.  I just wanted to stay there for long time. It’s a perfect place to meditate after a good hike. I closed my eyes and took few deep breaths. From there we hiked for another hour and reached Schlieper rock by 4pm. We sat there on the cliff and watched the vast valley for few minutes. It was so peaceful. Sunlight was coming down, drizzling started and wind became bit high. So we decided to go back. It was so much fun to walk in the light rain, muddy trail amidst of greenish trees. While walking back, we spotted couple of eagles sitting on branch for a long time. Just like a kid, I thought how lucky the eagles were. As I walked more, I was thinking how simple the life is and how complicated we made out of it with all these technologies and innovations. By 6.30pm, we reached down to the parking. I drove the car slowly without any music enjoying the silence. And it was raining all our way back to home. Overall, it became one of the most unforgettable day in my life.

Stress sucks

One of my friends from EEE batch in my college passed away last week. We used to roam together in college hostel days. He was in coma for 2 months and had cardiac arrest. Reason is that he was working in high pressure project in TCS and he was so stressed. I felt very sad to hear that today. This is another sad example of stress taking life away. He was married and have 5 yrs old daughter.  Never take stress lightly and nothing is more important than us. Job, appraisal, promotion etc are nothing when compared to life itself. Worst thing that Indian parents do to their kids is pushing them into competition right from school and always education (marks) are more important than anything else. Then once the kid grow up and comes to job, same thing continue. Just human life wasted.  I'm extremely pizzed off with the parents, education institutions to create sick human beings.  Corporate dictates IT people lives and we give that control to them. We got accustomed to comforts that we got out of these jobs. But It takes a heavy toll on our personal lives. It's time to think and decide how much we want to give ourselves to these corporates.

Samurai Journey

Samurai journey is the biography of Osamu Osawa. Samurai is the sector of people with disciplined culture. They all had very strong character. I was fascinated about Samurai when I watched the movie “Last Samurai”. Being trained in disciplined martial arts, I was able to relate to that culture. Strong character involves collection of beautiful traits. One of those traits is indomitable spirit or undying will. Being born into the samurai family, Osamu had this trait deep in his character. Throughout his life, there were lots of ups and downs. He was very famous once in Japan and then in another couple of years, he came down to the streets in US. Around World War II, he was part of the Japan’s air force and went near to the death and came back. He had multiple relationships breakup due to his life circumstances. Whenever he failed in his choices, he learnt his lessons and came back very strongly. Life throwed him a lot of unexpected failures but they couldn’t conquer him. One thing I really wondered is his courage to try new things and make it success. Generally as human beings, we tend to live in our comfort or safe zone. There is not much freedom there. We are afraid of failures to venture into new things. Sometimes failures are as essential as success itself. It creates certain level of balance within ourselves. Sometimes continuous success make people go out of balance and crazy. In Bhagavad Gita, Krishna says there is no success or failures and we always gain as long as we are open to learn the life lessons. Learning is the key and we should never lose sight of ourselves. All our frustrations or disappointments is due to our emotional attachment with success or failures. If we have learning attitude towards life, we can always grow irrespective of life situations.

Osamu was one of the very senior instructors in Karate (Shotokan). He got trained directly under Master Funakoshi. Osamu is yet another example of beautiful human being cultivated by disciplined martial arts.

Beautiful morning in Los Gatos

On the Saturday morning (Feb 13 2016), when we (myself and Gopi) started from home around 7.30am, it was drizzling beautifully in San Jose. We reached Los Gatos around 8am.  Sathya and Manju were waiting for us. We initially walked a bit and after that we started jogging. Weather was perfect. Mist, clouds, green grasses, lake, flowing water are awesome experiential treat.  As I was jogging, I witnessed my body, mind and spirit. In our convenient lifestyle, we have lot of mental activity but body and spirit are neglected most of the time. So jogging in fresh air helped to regain the balance and rejuvenate the energy. Whenever I go into open space, it is like reestablishing the connection with nature.

Blood was circulating throughout the body as heart was beating well. Lungs was getting good volume of air consistently. Just continuous awareness of mind kept the thoughts settle down. After 60min of jogging, felt totally free and balanced within myself. I became very sensitive to the surroundings. Like a kid, able to notice and enjoy many small things like flowers, green grass, chillness in the air, mist, lake, sound of the birds etc. Life is not that complicated. As we put ourselves in comfort zone, our ability to think or being creative drops drastically. Once we challenge ourselves physically, mentally and spiritually, life just blossoms and creativity oozes out.

This was the first time that I jogged for 6miles straight (thanks to Sathya & Manju). It was a nice challenge but I didn’t feel difficult. Years of my martial arts training with mind-body-spirit together made it more enjoyable. Once we finished the jogging, we did stretching exercises for about 15min. Able to feel the nervous system, muscular system very much alive. It felt so good. So at least once in a week, we should just step out in an open space, give the world a break and touch the fundamentals of life. I see this is more and more essential since our lifestyles are getting more and more convenient.
